Biography

Dr. Everett is a Colorado native, born and raised in the Denver metropolitan area. He graduated from Arvada West High School and holds a B.A. from Western State College of Colorado and an M.A. from Colorado State University. Dr. Everett earned his doctorate in history at the University of Arkansas.  Dr. Everett specializes in Colorado and American West history with an emphasis on geography and politics.  His first book, The Colorado State Capitol: History, Politics, Preservation, was published by the University Press of Colorado  in 2005; he continues to guide visitors and conduct research and publications about the statehouse.  Dr. Everett's second book, Creating the American West: Boundaries and Borderlands was published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2014; it was a finalist for that year's Colorado Book Awards.  His third book, Colorado Day by Day, a joint publication between History Colorado and the University Press of Colorado, was released in 2020.  Dr. Everett presents regularly at academic conferences and for public audiences, makes media appearances and contributions, and participates in scholarly and public history activities throughout Colorado.  He is working currently on two manuscript projects, one about recent historic preservation and restoration efforts at the Colorado State Capitol, and a study on the development and consequences of Colorado's beet sugar industry in the early twentieth century.
