Throughout the course of this internship I have learned a lot about some of the behind-the-scenes work of the PEHC, as well as some information on public history in general. It has been great being able to help this department and grow my skills along the way. Ive been able to work on my research skills as well as my work ethic and time managements skills. Overall, this internship has been valuable and I am grateful for the kick start I now have in public history work and in the internship process.
My internship focused a lot on making revisions to the Public and Environmentsl History Centers website. I worked alongside Dr. Sarah Payne in combing through all of the websites information and taking notes. The first step was to note what could be changed in overall aesthetic as well as content of each project displayed on their main pages. After that was done, we discussed a new website design. We discussed what general information we thought would be best to keep, as well as how we wanted to display it. We consulted many newsletters as well as other websites from similar departments in other schools in the country. Once we had a general idea of what we wanted, I was able to sketch out a physical design of the overall website layout. Dr. Payne and I then presented our design to Abbie Blach in the Liberal Arts Department, who will be able to apply the design to the website. My final step was to take notes once again. I went through all of the information I had and began, with Dr. Paynes help, choosing projects to display on the website. Once those were chose I could use my notes and the websites information to create new descriptions and formatting. When the PEHC is ready, this information will go into their new and improved website.
