“Corruption costs the world between $2.5 and 3.5 trillion dollars every year and also creates obstacles that prevent effective responses to urgent public problems, such as environmental protection and the reduction of different forms of inequality. And yet historians rarely focus directly on the history of corruption and anticorruption. This is beginning to change, in part due to European Union support for academic research on the history of corruption and anticorruption. My research contributes to this exciting new trend in historical studies.”

“I study a time and place when epidemic illness, military violence, and unstable weather patterns disrupted the lives of millions of people. In a few short decades, these people had to adapt their city buildings, family structures, religious practice, and even food choices to survive. My research into 14th-century Provence reveals dynamic communities using creative methods to survive disease, attack, flood, and drought. My work dispels the tired clichés of feudalism, the “Church”, and general ignorance. Historical research in general can help us move away from judgment of other cultures so that we can learn from every historical moment.”
